Right man at the wrong club?

Shebby Singh

Jose Mourinho is a personality in football that would be warmly received in any country - any country that is, except Spain for the moment.

For despite being at the top of La Liga in the 20th week of the current campaign, he still receives criticisms and complaints from fans, journalists and former greats alike, so much to the point that there has been much speculation on whether he would leave the club at the end of the season or the foreseeable future.

Personally I find it quite unfortunate that this man, a former FIFA Ballon d’Or Best Coach winner, two-time UEFA Champions League winner for two diferrent teams and six-time League winner for three different teams and the current manager of the team at the top of the La Liga and probable winners in my opinion, has to endure such scathing criticisms.

How is it that a man so loved by the fans and club of his three previous teams, be hated so much in his current team in Spain?

The answer is really quite simple. Real Madrid is a unique club steeped in tradition and past glories and winning games alone will not cut it for the fans.

Even if Jose Mourinho won 36 out of the 38 league games of a season by a huge margin, but lose to Barcelona twice, the fans would still not be satisfied.

Unfortunately, that is the case now. His current Madrid team is doing what Portuguese tactician does best, deliver results consistently.

However, Madrid fans want more than that. They want flair, not grinding out 1-0 wins. They want attacking formations, not ultra-defensive ones. And most importantly, they want to beat Barcelona, more than anything in the world.

Because they have met each other so regularly these past two seasons, the El Clasico clashes have become greatly magnified and the statistics easier to recall. The most defining statistic Jose Mourinho beating Barcelona only once in his time at Real - an extra time winner in last season’s Copa Del Rey final.

Reports from all over the world claim that Mourinho intends to leave this summer and move back to England. I for one am all up for that. I believe that Mourinho coming back to the Premier League would be a huge boost to the league.

Not only would we have a new great manager in the fold to tackle the others, we would also have one of the most entertaining characters in modern football. Mourinho would provide that extra incentive to tune into matches or catch highlights of any press conference just to hear his next quote.

Knowing Mourinho’s style, he would like to leave on a high. And seeing that once again he would most probably win the La Liga this season, this might be the perfect timing.

So which team should he join you may ask. There will definitely be rumours of him taking the Old Trafford job with Sir Alex Ferguson’s imminent departure over the next few seasons.

Is Arsenal a possibility, with Wenger failing to produce the results at the start of the season? Or his former stomping ground Chelsea, perhaps lead them back in a second charge towards the league title and more silverware.

One team I think he would be a good fit for is Tottenham Hotspurs. Consider this: Harry Redknapp currently has his own legal issues to deal with and a very real possibility that he may be the next England manager after Euro 2012, so that leaves his space possibly vacant over the summer at Tottenham.

A team with the quality of Tottenham, and also with its location also being in London could be the ideal move for Mourinho.

I’m sure he’ll be welcomed by most of England, so why not Tottenham? Of course everyone is tipping him to be the man that replaces Ferguson at the Manchester United, but at Tottenham I believe he will be at a club that is destined for greater things and he has a chance to elevate the club to even higher than what it currently is at.

The question is, will he succeed there? Definitely.
