It is considered as Liverpool FC's anthem and as such as it the wordings are also present in the Shankly gates at Anfield and also on the club's crest. But frankly You'll Never Walk Alone is not just used by Liverpool as other clubs such as Glasgow Celtic of Scotland and Borussia Dortmund of Germany have also adapted the song as their club theme song along with many others.
Here in the Philippines, the song will be used for a primary cause, it will be the main theme song for "Dili kamo nag-iisa" the charity match between a combination of the Philippine National team with some friends and the United Football League and Internacional de Madrid, a Spanish Tercera Division side based in Madrid.
But what is it about YNWA that a number of clubs have adapted it as its own, and how did it takeshape the footballing world by storm?
Originally, YNWA is a song from the broadwayBroadway musical, Carousel, written in 1945. It was first heard in the second act of the musical where it was sung to comfort one of the main characters, and again in the final scene of the musical. After the musical, YNWA was then recorded by various artists from Frank Sinatra, Judy Garland, Elvis Presley and even Barbra Streisand. But it was the record of Gerry and the Pacemakers which became to be the one used by more than thirty football clubs.
During the 1960's, the disk jockey at Anfield would usually play the top ten hits during that week, with the number one song being played last. When You'll Never Walk Alone was number one, fans would be in unison singing it, and once it dropped out of the number one spot several weeks after, the fans would still continue singing it. From there on, You'll Never Walk Alone was indeed deemed to be Liverpool FC's anthem, which was then adopted by a host of clubs including Celtic, Borussia Dortmund, St. Pauli & Feyenoord. From then on the rest was history as the song also serves as a uniting factor for the fans especially in times trouble.
Lyrics for You'll Never Walk Alone
When you walk through a storm hold your head up high,
And don't be afraid of the dark.
At the end of a storm is a golden sky
And the sweet silver song of a lark.Walk on through the wind,
Walk on through the rain,
Tho' your dreams be tossed and blown.
Walk on, walk on with hope in your heart
And you'll never walk alone,
You'll never walk alone!
Here are some videos that shows how the song can unite rivals on and off the pitch even for a short time. This was during the UEFA Cup (now Europa League) tie between Glasgow Celtic and Liverpool FC held at Celtic Park in 2003.
And this is another video this time at Anfield in a UEFA Champions League match between Liverpool and FC Barcelona in 2007.
