The Weekend Special - January 27-29 edition

2012.01.22 Kia Rio Cup Headline Photo

Welcome to the Weekend Special. This little weekly feature will have some of the writers from Soccercentral Philippines suggest some games for you to watch this weekend, whether live on your television or your live stream.

Here are the results from last week:

North London versus Manchester - Different scorelines, same result. The North London clubs were *that* close to securing draws against the Manchester clubs, but late goals did them in, a controversial late penalty for City versus Spurs and then Danny Welbeck from Antonio Valencia for United against the Gunners.

Kia Rio Cup - A 1-1 draw that turned into a 4-2 defeat in a penalty shootout was thought by all to generally be an encouraging result. Denis Wolf made an impression, with Under-23 reserve Marwin Angeles of Laos FC providing the tying goal.

Army Fritz & Maciol versus Loyola Meralco Sparks FC - The Sparks temporarily had the lead in the UFL Division 1 with a 2-1 win. Goals came from Mark Hartmann, then from Meliton Pelayo, before James Younghusband secured the game-winner.

Lazio versus FC Internazionale Milano - The Nerazzuri win their seventh straight, coming from behind to beat their Roman opponents, 2-1 at the San Siro. This win moves Inter up to fourth, three points away from Udinese, who currently holds the final UEFA Champions League slot available.

Ajax versus AZ Alkmaar - Status quo as a 1-1 draw between the two teams proved sufficient. A free kick from AZ's Rasmus Elm opened the scoring but Simon Poulsen's own goal evened the score.

Here are this weekend's games that you might just want to check out:

Liverpool versus Manchester United - To see how magnified this match is, we even have some football pundits answer questions regarding the match here.

Queens Park Rangers versus Chelsea - Other than the above tie, this fixture is the one that will give the FA the biggest headaches. Days before the FA investigates John Terry's racist remarks to Anton Ferdinand, the two will clash at Loftus Road. It will be a little different since Mark Hughes has taken over managerial duties, but we can expect a harsh crowd to welcome AVB's crew.

Everton versus Fulham - Who is the best American playing football? Is it Landon Donovan, who produced that magical goal during the World Cup. Is it Clint Dempsey, who was sensational against Newcastle. Or maybe Tim Howard, the goalkeeper, who pulled off scoring a goal? This match will help decide.

Ghana versus Mali - The Black Stars are one of the huge favorites to win the African Cup of Nations, but FC Barcelona super sub and Mali captain Seydou Keita will have none of it for Les Aigles.

Juventus versus Udinese - The Bianconeri are on top of Serie A as of the moment, but their upcoming opponents are third and can tie them with the win.
